Below is a summary table listing primarily "in-the-woods" activities and accomplishments of the Friends of Dicken Woods, for the year 2006.

2/5/06 Dicken Elementary Cub Scout Pack 13 Chipping Project. Raised sunken boardwalk nearest school and chipped approaches; chipped center bisecting trail. Used up entire chip reserve! (30 in-park volunteer work hours - 10 scouts, 5 adult leaders, and Doug Wood, approximately 2 hours)
2/19/06 Replaced chips that had eroded out of stream crossings and refrozen to the ground; trimmed branches at face level on entire trail loop; removed a 4” dead tree that had fallen across the west trail loop. The damage was caused by heavy rain the week of 2/12. (2 in-park volunteer work hours - Stephanie Hunter & Doug Wood)
2/21/06 2006 Midwinter Candlelight Walk (2nd Annual) 300 attendees.
3/9/06 River Raisin Raptor Center indoor presentation at Dicken Elementary by Dody Wyman, as part of the FoDW classroom grant program. Attended by both 4th grade classes - approximately 50 students. (no in-park volunteer hours)
3/12/06 Stephanie & Ray Hunter installed two bat houses they had received as gifts and donated to Dicken Woods on trees on the Dicken Woods - Dicken School property line right-of-way overlooking the “Frog Pond”. (1 in-park volunteer work hour - Stephanie & Ray Hunter)
3/26/06 Perimeter trash pickup along Maple & Pauline sidewalks (2 in-park volunteer hours - Kay Holsinger)
3/29/06 First draft of Dicken Woods Vision Statement and Stewardship Plan accepted by Friends of Dicken Woods general membership for trial use and comment. This will be updated as needed to keep pace with descriptive information, stewardship strategies, and short-term (1 year) and longer-term (2-5 years) priorities. (preparation hours by stewards Doug Wood - 20+, Stephanie Hunter 3 hours. No in-park volunteer hours)
4/28/06 Wildflower plot preparation at end of Carol & May Apple planting (3 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie Hunter & Marian Williams)
4/29/06 Annual Spring Spruce-Up Day. Cut guard rail into pieces for pickup by NAP. Cut up large logs from trees that have fallen across the trails over the past couple of years & laid them down as trail edging, pulled Dames Rocket, picked up all the trash, tilled the soil between the end of Carol and the guardrail in preparation of starting our wildflower seed/root stock bank, put up a new set of temporary directional map markers and checked on all the plantings we put in last fall. Accepted donated cut leaf coneflowers for wildflower garden use. 5/3/06 NAP picked up guard rail segments from end of Dicken Drive
5/7/06 Planted red oak seeding, picked up trash, & looked for 2 missing wayfinder maps (1 in-park volunteer hour - Doug Wood)
5/8/06 Planted the rubeckia (cut-leaf coneflower) that was given to us by Andrew Comai. Put 4 clumps near the end of Dicken,1 clump by the bridge, 2 clumps near the tadpole pond, & saved 2 clumps for the Carol St garden to be planted June 5 by the Dicken students. Noted new wild geraniums on west trail loop in old orchard area. (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie Hunter & Inge Ferguson)
5/12/06 Replaced missing wayfinder maps (1 in-park volunteer hour - Doug Wood)
5/22/06 American Bittern sighted at east park boundary adjacent to Stephan Terrace by the Boyd family. Species confirmed onsite by Dea Armstrong.
5/22/06 Pulled dames rocket on west trail loop. Approx 3 leaf bags. (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie & Ray Hunter)
5/24/06 Bird count. (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie Hunter & Janet Leftridge)
5/30/06 Established initial 3 Dicken Woods photopoints with assistance of Maggie Hostettler, NAP photomonitoring coordinator. Marked locations, and took benchmark photos (1 in-park volunteer hour - Doug Wood)
6/3/06 Cultivated soil at end of Carol St. and marked off planting areas in preparation for June 5 planting (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie & Ray Hunter)
6/4/06 Pulled dames rocket & trimmed brush on center path & west trail loop. (2 in-park volunteer hours - Doug Wood)
6/5/06 Initial planting of wildflowers in new wildflower seed garden at end of Carol Street as part of Dicken Elementary classroom grants. Michigan native wildflower root stock obtained form Native Plant Nursery. Planted Culvers Root, Woodland Sunflower, Nodding Wild Onion, New England Aster, Thimbleweed, Black eyed Susan, Cutleaved Coneflower, Golden Alexander, Smooth Aster, Beardtongue Foxglove, and Rudbeckia Triloba (Three lobed Coneflower). (4 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie Hunter, Inge Ferguson, 3 teachers and parent chaperones, 25 students from Carol Dekeizer’s 2nd grade class).
week of 6/5/06 Supervised walks in Dicken Woods for 3 kindergarten classes (60 students, 2 teachers total) with pre-walk discussions in the Dicken Elementary Media Center (6 in-park volunteer hours - Naela Jenkins, Stephanie Hunter, Rayelene Mieske)
6/12/06 SBC (USA Utilities contractor) digs holes on Maple-Dicken sidewalk and 30 ft north in woods in preparation of drilling conduit under Maple Road
6/12-19/06 Observation of SBC project, reports to NAP, and request for NAP support (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie Hunter, Doug Wood, Kay Holsinger)
7/1/06 Trim brush around trails. (2 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie & Ray Hunter)
7/2-3/06 Area at end of Dicken Drive weeded and brush growing from the chipped area removed. Eighty plus wildflower plugs (purchased form the Native Plant Nursery) planted, mostly at the end of Dicken Drive. They were planted in groups and have been mulched and identified with a name tag and green bamboo stick, so are easy to spot. Additionally, the area around the sign at the corner of S. Maple and Pauline cleaned up (weeded and buckthorn trimmed behind the sign, edged chips to provide clear visual boundary for mowing) and 10 black-eyed Susans planted there. 7/5/06 Fences installed at park accesses at the end of Dicken & end of Carol by the city - not sure if it was Parks or Transportation.
7/16/06 Wildflower seed garden maintenance at the end of Carol Dr (1 in-park volunteer hour - Stephanie Hunter)

8/13/06 Weekly Sunday work day. Cleared brush from surface & edge of trails, removed overhanging tree limb on west trail loop, maintenance at Dicken & Carol Drive park access points, and trash pickup. (8 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie & Ray Hunter, Doug Wood, Kay Holsinger)
8/20/06 Weekly Sunday work day.. Cleared brush from surface and edge of trails; trash pickup. (6 in-park volunteer hours - Stephanie & Ray Hunter, Doug Wood)
